Lonely Mom’s Reaction to Getting Puppy for Birthday Has Internet Sobbing

A mom being gifted a surprise puppy on her birthday is making TikTok users all emotional.

In a video shared on October 20, user Sandy (@sandykins18) explained that she’d just moved out of the family home for the first time at age 32. Her mom Angeli was heartbroken, especially as Sandy had taken her dog Toby.

To cheer her mom up, Sandy and her family adopted a Maltipoo called Casper. The puppy was a surprise gift at Angeli’s b-day party, with the birthday girl breaking down in happy tears the moment she saw him.

Captioned “I’d give her the stars if I could,” the clip has received almost 250,000 likes and 1.5 million views.

Can pets improve mental health?

A 2022 study by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) found that pet ownership has numerous benefits for both our mental and physical well-being.

Polling 3,596 US adults, 87 percent of respondents said owning a pet had boosted their mental health, while 76 percent said it had improved their physical fitness.

Some 83 percent said they spend most of their day with their pet, with 57 percent thinking about adopting another animal.

A recent study by MORE THAN Insurance and charity Dogs for Good echoed HABRI’s findings. Surveying 2,004 UK adults, researchers discovered that those with a dog were happier than those without.

Some 69 percent of respondents credited their canine companion with helping them to be more social, while 31 percent said walking with their dog made them feel less lonely.

However, it was people with disabilities that benefited the most from owning a dog. Some 81 percent said their pet has helped them to meet new people and have meaningful interactions, while 52 percent of dog owners with disabilities met a good friend while walking their pup.

“Nothing like seeing a mother happy”

The video starts with Angeli hiding her tears as Sandy and her dog move out for the first time in 32 years. Although her mom was happy for Sandy, who has recently gotten married and moved in with her husband, Angeli quickly became lonely.

The next clip shows screenshots that Angeli had sent to Sandy, such as “I’m having a real hard time” and “Can I have Toby for tonight.”

Hating that her mom was struggling, Sandy and her sisters adopted a white Maltipoo pup called Casper.

In the final clip, Casper is presented to a shocked Angeli while the rest of the family sings “Happy Birthday.”

She bursts into tears the second she sees him, yelling. “What? Wait a minute, this is my dog?”

She then picks Casper up and gives him a hug while crying into his fur.

TikTok users were touched by Angeli’s delight, with DanielleRea commenting: “You can already tell that that baby is going to be so spoiled…”

“This is the best thing you could have done for your Mom!” said Janice.

While Maryhodder commented: “I just know that puppy will have the best life ever.”
