Accessible in the United States and Canada since the end of 2021, then in many European countries since this summer, the platform is already open in France and Spain.
The arrival of Horizon Worlds in France is eagerly awaited by those interested in the metaverse, for the importance that Mark Zuckerberg gives to this type of platform and for the controversies that have quickly damaged the party.
An “immersive social experience”
Meta’s CEO announced the news on his Facebook account on Tuesday: “We’re launching Horizon Worlds in France and Spain today! Can’t wait to see people explore and create immersive worlds, and expand to other countries soon. » In a press release, Horizon Worlds is presented as a “Immersive social experience” in virtual reality to do activities with friends or family, attend cultural events, or even create your own virtual world and share it with others.
While the use of the platform itself is free, it is currently required to have a virtual reality headset Meta Quest 2. But the company revealed in April that a mobile version will be released later in the year. You also need a Facebook account to access it, but this should also improve with the creation of Meta accounts, announced this month. At the beginning of the year, the company was happy to have passed the 300,000 user mark, a number that should increase with this opening in Europe.
A toxic environment?
What may turn off some users – especially female users – are the various sexual harassment scandals and modest shortcomings that have quickly tarnished the image of Horizon Worlds. A problem that Meta is well aware of, since a large part of the news release is dedicated to regulations and various protections that users can have. In particular, it is a question of setting a personal limit so as not to be too close or to “sound mode” to only hear people added to the friends list.
Augmented and virtual realities play an increasingly important role in Meta communication. The opening of Horizon Worlds in five new countries this summer (UK, Ireland, Iceland, France and Spain) is further evidence of the company’s acceleration in this direction. Until replaced by Facebook and Instagram in a few years?
